The Weekly Standard and The Washington Post

William Kristol is the editor and founder of The Weekly Standard. He also writes a column for The Washington Post and is a regular commentator on Fox News. More information

A rare beast in the world of commentary, Kristol exerts perhaps more influence behind the scenes than he does in his columns and TV gigs. As the leader of a magazine and movement closely identified with the Bush administration, Kristol had ready access to and influence over the executive branch. He advocated—and continues to defend—the Iraq War and other elements of Bush's foreign-policy doctrine, although he has also been sharply critical of what he judged as the military's tactical blunders. Kristol’s opposition to the Harriet Miers Supreme Court nomination helped to sink her chances, and his support for Sarah Palin helped to put her on the 2008 ticket.

Kristol's conservative bona fides led to his selection as a New York Times columnist in 2008, a posting that lasted a year. Although he remains consistently neoconservative—an ideology that he, as much as anyone, defined—his clout has diminished somewhat with the Republican fall from power.

Dennis Blair vs. the Intelligence Community

It's hard, I'm told, to overestimate the loathing intelligence operatives feel for Blair—who has never stood up for the operatives in any interagency battle.

2009: Could Have Been Worse

The Obama administration (so far) hasn't succeeded in doing too much damage to the American economy.

A Pyrrhic Victory?

When a fellow conservative tried to cheer me up this morning by assuring me that the Senate Democrats' victory on health care was going to be a Pyrrhic one, I realized I didn't remember much about Pyrrhus.

No Substitute for Victory

The better course is to push the administration to take responsibility for the outcome in Afghanistan by continuing to support a fully resourced war effort.

Anti-Obama, Pro-America

In areas where policies are still being debated--in foreign policy in particular--conservatives need to keep urging Obama to do the right thing.

Irving Kristol, 1920-2009

It's true that [Irving Kristol's] death leaves the world a poorer place. But it's a world made richer by the life he lived, and the legacy he leaves.

War in Afghanistan

A Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Presidency?

Obama should, as Ike Skelton suggests, remember 9/11 ... Surely this generation of Americans can remember 9/11 and act on the memory by winning the war in Afghanistan.

The Real Public Option: Start Over

The real 'public option' is to scrap the current grandiose plans and to start over. There is no health care crisis, and doing no harm is far preferable to doing real damage to a good health care system.

Obama Attacks Docs and Cops

I was struck by two [statements] that seemed to exemplify Obama’s easy disdain for the less enlightened among us -- in this case, for family docs and for Cambridge cops.

The Balloon Deflates

The stimulus hasn't worked. Cap-and-trade and health care reform are in trouble. The can't-we-all-get-along foreign policy isn't leading to a more peaceful world. And the administration seems to have no idea what to do about Guantánamo.
