Shakira vs. Arizona Immigration Law

Max Fisher 345 Views May 3, 2010
With pundits and journalist from across America taking firm positions on Arizona's controversial new anti-immigration law, it was really only a matter of time until a high-profile celebrity joined the fray. Award-winning Colombian singer Shakira has launched a full-strength media campaign against the law, even traveling to Phoenix to talk to the city's mayor and police chief in person. She cites "human rights and civil rights" concerns and worries that the law could be used to harass Latinos like herself:
If this law was already in effect today, for example, I could be detained and arrested and taken away because I don't even have my driver's license here. I'm completely undocumented here. ...
I just met with some families and women who have been subjected to domestic violence, and they are so concerned. They're going to live in fear to call the police or to report a crime that has been inflicted to them. They're trying to protect their kids and their own families from abusers. and now they're going to have to protect themselves from the government.
Here's Shakira speaking about the law on CNN's Studio 360 and, below that, with Ryan Seacrest on his nationally syndicated radio show.
