Sharron Angle Supported Armed Resistance

Heather Horn 22 Views Jun 15, 2010
Moderates and liberals were never over the moon about Sharron Angle, Republican Senate nominee in Nevada. Steve Benen of the left-leaning Washington Monthly, for example, is describing her visit to Capitol Hill Tuesday as an attempt "to convince party leaders and her would-be colleagues that she's not stark raving mad." But now Angle's opponents are even more skeptical: an interview from January has emerged in which she appears to be advocating violent rebellion:

You know, our Founding Fathers, they put that Second Amendment in there for a good reason and that was for the people to protect themselves against a tyrannical government. And in fact Thomas Jefferson said it's good for a country to have a revolution every 20 years.

She continues to say that she hopes it doesn't come to this, but that if it does, "the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out." Her blogosphere observers are somewhere between outraged and amused.

  • 'Armed Insurrection'  "I'm not kidding," The Post's Greg Sargent assures readers. "The most charitable interpretation here was that Angle was floating armed insurrection--or 'Second Amendment remedies'--as a defensible response if electoral politics fails to change where things are headed under the current regime." He has talked to the radio host who interviewed Angle, and the host agrees.
  • She's Said This Before, Josh Marshall points out at Talking Points Memo. "Now, people speak metaphorically a lot," he acknowledges, and "because it's Jefferson those lines have been grandfathered in as acceptable metaphoric." This is different:

Here though Angle really does seem to be pretty explicitly saying her election and the election of folks like her might be our last chance to prevent a violent revolt by Tea Partiers and fellow traveling folk who've decided its time to string up the current crew and install themselves by force.

  • Probably Because She Was a Member of a Far-Right Third Party  Outside the Beltway's Doug Mataconis links instead to a report on Talking Points Memo which detailed Angle's involvement in the Independent American Party, whose members held signs such as "If Guns Are Outlawed, How Can We Shoot the Liberals?" Says Mataconis, "this is the kind of information that I'm sure Harry Reid is looking for."
