Happy Hour Vid: Colbert Goes to Bat For Nazi-Reenacting Candidate

Alex Eichler Oct 13, 2010

Republican congressional candidate Rich Iott became the focus of a lot of scorn when The Atlantic's Josh Green reported that he used to participate in World War II re-enactments dressed as a member of the Waffen-SS. But in the eyes of jokester Stephen Colbert, this isn't really that terrible a sin; Iott was just trying to get closer to his son.

Fathers bond with their songs in all kinds of ways. Building a boat... fixing a car.... solving "the Jewish problem."

Colbert goes on to note that when fellow Republicans like Eric Cantor condemn Iott, it helps to clarify the sometimes-fuzzy categories of 'acceptable' and 'unacceptable.' "For the Republican leadership, the line you cannot cross, as is so often the case in life, is dressing like a Nazi," says Colbert. "Thankfully, dressing the president as a Nazi? Still okay."
