Texas Sen. John Cornyn's appearance on Fox News today was an exercise in expectation management, with the National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman warning the GOP against "overpromising and underdelivering." Still, it was tough not to notice Cornyn's own confidence when asked about a possible party-switch by Joe Lieberman.
"Joe Lieberman is a great patriot," replied Cornyn. "He's certainly a hawk on national security matters. I think he votes like Republicans in those matters."
Lest moderate Democrats like Mark Pryor, Mary Landrieu, and Ben Nelson felt excluded, Cornyn proceeded to add:
We would certainly welcome [Lieberman] or any other Democrat who wants to switch sides of the aisle and caucus with us. But I think after this election we're going to have to look and see who is left, because I think there are going to be a lot of people who aren't coming back.
