The Anthony Weiner era has just a few hours remaining.
The scandal-plagued congressman has formally submitted his resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Secretary of State Cesar Perales. Politico White House reporter Glenn Thrush tweets that the resignation is "effective...midnight, June 21" (tonight) and that copies were "CC'd to [Minority Leader Nancy] Pelosi, [Speaker of the House John] Boehner."
Weiner announced his plans to step down amidst a sexting scandal at a press conference last week.
The New York Daily News has published the full text of the letter online. It reads:
Dear Secretary Perales and Governor Cuomo
I hereby resign as the Member of the House of Representatives for New York's Ninth Congressional District effective at midnight, Tuesday, June 21, 2011. It has been an honor to serve the people of Queens and Brooklyn.
[Signed]
ANTHONY D. WEINER
Member of Congress
