A U.S. Senator has requested that an investigation be opened by American authorities to see if the rights of any U.S. citizens were violated by the phone-hacking of British tabloid News of the World. U.S. Senate Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller asked for the investigation in a letter written Tuesday, BBC News reports. Rockefeller warned of "serious consequences" if it turns out the paper broke U.S. law. Rockefeller said the accusations against the paper, "raises serious questions about whether the company has broken US law," and are too grave to go unnoticed. "I am concerned that the admitted phone hacking in London by the News Corp. may have extended to 9/11 victims or other Americans," he wrote. The Daily Mirror reported that News of the World attempted to hack the phones of 9/11 victims, but the private investigator they asked to do the job turned them down.
