Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey may have finally found a position that will allow him to tamp down speculation that he'll run for president in 2012. After repeatedly denying he's planning on jumping in the race, Christie has been named vice chairman of the Republican Governors Association, Politico reported Wednesday. Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin  has also been named to the executive committee. Rick Perry left his post as RGA chairman to run for president, and Governor Bob McDonnell of Virginia took over last month. Christie's move means he probably won't seek office in 2012, as he can't run and hold the post at the same time, but Politico's Maggie Haberman points out: "The RGA is a well-worn launch pad for governors searching for a role on the national stage. While Christie has, despite wishes to the contrary from his supporters, been adamant about not running in 2012, he's been quite consciously leaving the door open to 2016." Tim Pawlenty held the position from 2009 before he joined the 2012 presidential race.
