Did You Hear the One About the Pundit Who Thought Lesbians Are Funny?
Pundit Monica Crowley has apologized for jokingly wondering whether Sandra Fluke was a lesbian in a tweet Thursday, but her statement's not particularly satisfying. Crowley tweeted out this zinger Thursday:
To a man?"Sandra Fluke Announces Engagement"
— Monica Crowley (@MonicaCrowley) April 26, 2012
And people quickly pointed out that jokes premised on the punchline, "lesbians!" weren't all that funny. (Fluke is engaged to a man, for the record.) After what Crowley called "an insane hate tsunami" and Fluke's appearance on the Ed Schultz show in which she addressed the comment, Crowley has followed up:
Regret my tweeted question caused a stir. I certainly & unequivocally apologize to Sandra & anyone else I offended. Not my intention.
— Monica Crowley (@MonicaCrowley) April 27, 2012
Hmm. One wonders then, why she followed up with "I love exposing the Left's total lack of a sense of humor." But, hey, an apology is an apology, right?
To see why Crowley's latest tweet probably won't satisfy most people, read what Fluke herself had to say on MSNBC about it:
“I’m not going to let this kind of thing get to me personally. What really bothers me about it is exactly what you said, the blatant homophobia in the comment. The idea that’s an acceptable thing to say publicly."
So Fluke seems not to be looking for a personal apology so much as a recognition of the way the joke played up on common ways people have long hated on liberal feminists: by calling them lesbians. As if that's any sort of insult.
