Ron Barber, Gabrielle Giffords' Former Aide, Officially Declared Her Successor
The race to replace Gabrielle Gifford has been called: the Associated Press tweets that Ron Barber has officially been named the winner in the race for Arizona's District 8 seat in the House. Barber was injured in the Tuscon, Arizona shooting that severely injured Giffords and killed six others. Giffords gave up her seat in a moving video message in January. When Barber announced he was going to run to replace Giffords in February, Democrats thought he'd have a pretty good chance to win. Tonight, he proved them right by taking a commanding lead early. When the first results came in Barber had 53% of the vote, and that number barely wavered. As of right now, according to Politico's election map, Barber has 52.7 percent of the vote with 65.9 percent of polls reporting their results.
