When Did Romney Change His Mind on Marco Rubio?

Within the span of a work day, Marco Rubio's name was removed and then re-added to the list of people being vetted as Mitt Romney's VP choice. So, when exactly did Mitt change his mind?

It depends on who you ask. A quick refresher: Tuesday morning, ABC's Jonathan Karl said a top Romney campaign official told him Marco Rubio wasn't being vetted for the VP choice. The Washington Post corroborated the story, saying a Romney advisor confirmed Rubio didn't make it past the first phase. But then Romney spoke to the Associated Press Tuesday afternoon and said Rubio is being "thoroughly vetted" for the job

Karl stood by his morning report in a post on Tuesday night. Karl's original sources still claim that Rubio hasn't been asked turn over any documents or fill in any questionnaires before today, but a campaign advisor told Karl his sources are lying to him.

Karl says Romney "came under intense pressure today," from top Republicans for allegedly taking Rubio out of consideration, and that led Romney to reconsider. If so, Karl's sources were and are telling the truth. Rubio was asked if he was being vetted, and unsurprisingly he said no-comment. Campaign officials are denying Rubio was ever off the VP-list. A senior Romney campaign official told Karl, "emphatically that they were not under pressure from conservatives and that Romney never changed his mind." If campaign officials are telling the truth, then Rubio was never off the VP list and Karl's sources have been lying to him.

Romney said he was amused by the VP speculation Tuesday afternoon, because the only people who know who's being vetted are him and longtime aide Beth Myers. In an interview on Sean Hannity's radio show Tuesday afternoon, Romney said, "only Beth Myers and I know who is being vetted." When Hannity asked if his wife Ann knew, Romney said they, "talk about the possible people that I might select. But in terms of actually who is being vetted, that is something only two people know. And Beth Myers doesn’t talk."
