Mitt Romney Picked the Worst Time to Compliment Bill Clinton

No one came out of the Democratic Convention with more glowing reviews than former President Bill Clinton. Even Mitt Romney gave him props, but complimenting Clinton just before he campaigns for Obama in Florida, an important swing state, could end up costing him.

In a preview clip of his Meet the Press interview, Romney says Clinton could maybe win another presidency, "if the Constitution weren't in his way." Romney was that impressed with Clinton's off-the-cuff speech from the Convention. "But he did stand out in contrast with the other speakers. I think he really did elevate the Democrat convention in a lot of ways," he says. "And frankly the contrast may not have been as attractive as Barack Obama might have preferred if he were choosing who'd go before him and who'd go after." We always appreciate when a politician can give credit where credit's due. Clinton was arguably the best speaker at the convention. But, for Romney, the timing of his compliments couldn't be worse.

Clinton is heading to Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday to campaign for Obama. Florida is an important swing state that Obama's held a slight lead in. But the state is also still basking in the post-Convention Republican glow ever since the Romney party left town a little over a week ago. Many voters in the area are undecided, so sending a surrogate as good at explaining things as Clinton, with a nod of approval from his opponent, could prove to be a genius move on Obama's part.
