Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye has died at the age of 88, The Washington Post's Ed O'Keefe reports. The Democrat was hospitalized this weekend for respiratory complications. Inouye was an Army veteran of World War II (that's him in his uniform in 1959), lost his arm in battle, and won the National Medal of Honor. In another incident, Inouye was saved from a bullet hitting his chest by two silver dollar coins in his pocket.

Inoye was first elected in 1962. O'Keefe reports his last words were "Aloha." Democratic Gov. Neal Abercrombie will appoint a replacement. 

On the Senate floor, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, "He believed in me more than I believed in myself many, many years ago."
