Good Question!

Could Curry Save the Environment?

Heather Horn 172 Views Jul 20, 2010

Everyone's hoping for a technological breakthrough to curb emissions and slow global warming. Could it come in a tikka masala sauce?

Alex Balk at The Awl has high hopes: he's noticed an odd story in British paper The Independent. "Curry spices," writes The Independent's Environment Editor, Michael McCarthy, could hold the key to reducing the enormous greenhouse gas emissions given off by grazing animals such as sheep, cows and goats."

It turns out coriander and turmeric, in particular, can reduce methane emissions in sheep by "up to 40 per cent." Animal methane emissions are a significant source of the greenhouses gasses contributing to global warming. Has our environmental miracle been with us all along?
