Just over a month after the dustup caused by axing some features in Reader, the new Google Currents news app brings custom-made editions from over 150 media partners, RSS feeds and Google+ streams into one Flipboard-like interface. Surely hoping to compete with Facebook's new class of social apps that includes a growing number of social readers, Currents takes a mobile-first approach with apps for both Android and iOS devices. The apps offer ways to subscribe to specific publications and follow trending news for now, though Google's opened up a "self-service platform" that invites developers to build onto the platform. We haven't given the new product a test run yet, but it looks great based on the preview video. You can download the apps here.
