Sorry, but 'Smash' and 'Happy Endings' Got Cancelled

NBC

In the dead of night, while you were sleeping or paying attention to other less trivial things, ABC and NBC announced the cancellation of Happy Endings and Smash, respectively. Feel free to use this space as a memorial for both shows.

Lessons from the End Times of 'Smash'

Any hopes that Smash would rebound after its disastrous second season premiere two weeks ago have been dashed. NBC's musical backstage drama returned last night after a week off for the State of the Union to even lower numbers than the premiere, with a dismal 0.9 rating.

Nobody Likes 'Smash'

Well, it's back. NBC's much-maligned high stakes gamble of a series Smash returned for a second season last night, supposedly repaired after a backstage debacle of a first season, and was, ratings-wise, an unqualified disaster. At a certain point, one has to wonder: Should NBC just throw in the towel?

The Great Showrunner Shuffle

'Tis the season of the showrunner shakeup. NBC's Community and Smash are both getting new showrunners to address their various problems (non-stellar ratings, mainly) while the creator of HBO's spooky sexpot saga True Blood is handing off the reins to another writer.

'Smash' Recasts Its Biggest Role

Late last night news broke ("news broke" is sort of a dramatic phrase for this, but whatever) that Gossip Girl writer/producer Josh Safran will be taking over as the showrunner of NBC's Smash from creator Theresa Rebeck. Will this do anything to change the trajectory of the sadly disappointing show?

'Smash' Gets Silly

Yes, it was just last week that we were gushing lamely about Uma Thurman's guest starring role on Smash, but we're going to gush lamely some more.

Welcome, Uma!

It was just last week that we were complaining about how depressing Smash has gotten, with everyone fighting and breaking up and becoming pillheads. But luckily last night a tall blonde Veela arrived and started to get things back on track.

'Smash' Gets Real

At the tail-end of last night's mostly ridiculous episode of Smash there was a scene that, dare we say, bordered on, like, good. Not The Wire good or anything, but definitely campy dramatic good. It was quite refreshing.

Television's Least Romantic Night

Technically we didn't watch The Bachelor last night, but rather on Hulu this morning in a feverish attempt to understand just what is going on with Ben and evil Courtney and the gang. Good lord, this show is strange.

'Smash' Needs to Go Full Drama

NBC's once promising, now struggling Smash should drop the attempt to be a savvy look backstage, and just fully embracing the camp and going for out-and-out soap.

Picking Sides On 'Smash'

Last night was episode two of Smash, NBC's somewhat make-it-or-break-it drama about the ins and outs of putting on a Broadway show. So after a big opening night last week, how did the show fare yesterday, quality-wise at least? Hm. Let's say reviews are mixed.

Huge Opening Night for 'Smash'

Last night's big premiere of Smash was a boon for NBC and musical lovers, pulling in 11.5 million viewers and a 3.9 ratings in the all-important 18-49 demo. This is big for NBC. Actually, it's big for network TV.
