The Financial Times became the latest news agency to fall prey to the Syrian Electronic Army, the hacking group which has claimed the social media scalps of the AP, The Onion, the BBC, and NPR, perhaps signaling that news outlets should be more like The Onion and come clean about how they're getting hacked.
The Onion has released a detailed account of how it believes the Syrian Electronic Army hacked into its extremely popular Twitter account the other day, providing a rare glimpse at the simple yet devious spear-phishing emails that can crack major media outlets — and probably you.
On Tuesday Al Jazeera became the latest casualty in the online war raging alongside the Syrian conflict as hackers claiming to be Syrian loyalists defaced it with a screed against its coverage, but they weren't terribly thorough.
Once again, somebody hacked into Reuters blogs and posted an inflammatory, and false, story from the Middle East, this time reporting that Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal (pictured), had died. He has not.
Reuters became involved in the Syrian conflict in a way it didn't intend to on Friday, when someone hacked into its blogging site and published a fake post purporting to quote a Syrian rebel leader saying his forces were withdrawing from Aleppo.
The striking thing about the "Syrian Electronic Army" attack on LinkedIn's blog is that, well, they attacked LinkedIn, which really seems to have very little to do with the conflict in Syria.
Now that we know way too much about Bashar al-Assad's personal life, we need to extend a warning so that his regime doesn't end up knowing too much about yours.
But the attack missed the official page, and doesn't seem to have been too well organized
